The Summer of 2004
The Deer Park Library was a busy place during the summer of 2004. Below are just a few of the events that took place.
Shirley and Renee
Happy Anniversary to Shirley and Renee!
Stop by or call the library to show Shirley and Renee your appreciation for their hard work this past year. This is Shirley Perkins first anniversary as the Library Director. Renee Powers is celebrating her sixth-month anniversary as Library Assistant. Both of these ladies enjoy working at the library very much despite being on an accelerated learning curve, trying to absorb a lot of new information very quickly and keep up with the never-ending list of tasks, chores and unexpected work that comes with operating a library.
Wildlife & Landscape Photography Workshop – Thursday, July 29, 7:30 p.m., at the Library
Children 10 years or older can join Shirley Perkins and Matt Kennedy for this workshop. We’ll talk about basic rules and tips for taking photos outdoors, camera care, and suggestions on how to choose a photograph for competition. Bring some of your favorite photos to share with the group. In August we’ll launch our 1st Annual Deer Park Library Photo Contest. Pre-registration for the workshop is required. Sign up at the library, call or e-mail to register.

Summer Reading Program
Coinciding with our themes Exploring and Discovering New Frontiers, a footprint appears on the library walls for every 100 pages or 1-hour read by our participants. In six weeks over 100 footprints are now marching across the room! Readers can still register until August 4. Our Grand Finale and Smokey the Bear Birthday party for summer reading program participants will be Saturday, August 7th at 10:30. Along with the birthday cake, there are some fun games planned and prizes. One reading program participant will be selected at random to win a $20 gift certificate or the beach party basket on display at the library.
Story and Craft Hour, Wednesday, July 28, 10:30 a.m., Library Community Room
Lori Hartshorn is teaming up with Sara Pearson for Story and Craft Hour. Lori, an animated reader, will share her favorite books with the group. Sara has a talent for planning very clever craft projects children and parents enjoy. This program is geared especially for toddlers through Kindergarten. Pre-registration is requested so craft materials are available for each child.

We are grateful for the $1,900 grant we received in June from the AnnMarie Foundation to purchase DVD/VHS and CD audiobooks. Last fall, we also received a $500 grant from St. Croix Electric to purchase non-fiction how-to items. Over the past few months Shirley, Renee and our faithful volunteers, Millie Roberts and Kaitlin Hartshorn have been weeding items off the shelves to accommodate new purchases in all genres. Our patrons have been very patient while we have rotated entire sections of materials to new locations in the library. Shirley has begun to buy new materials with the grant money. If you check the website in a few weeks you will see some of the new items we purchased listed.
Since 2003, the library has received $325 in memorials to honor the memory of: Agnes Frank, Helen Gust Barnum, and Herb Gust.
